| So I was about to write this brief and to the point blog post about my
dinner experience tonight, but then I was filled with guilt and shame.
Let me explain myself. Earlier tonight I decided to order a pizza from
a local pizzeria. I was pretty excited about it. Virgin crust, black
olives, mushrooms, peppers, onions, and of course pineapple....because
pizza just isnt pizza without the pineapple. Thirty minutes later it
arrived hot and emitting a pleasant aroma. I slowly opened the box
while breathing in the heavenly pie. As I opened my eyes with a big
smile, I was met with dissapointment. The pizza was cut into squares.
I know this sounds silly, but it upset me. I began to rant, "Who in
their right mind cuts their pizza into squares?! Was it not determined
at the First International Pizza Conclave that pizza is to be cut into
triangles?! TRIANGLES! Triangles, at one end presenting us with the
perfect area for our hand to grip and at the other end the perfect
angle for it to gain entry to our mouth. Perfect design, no mess."
It didn't stop there. I continued, "SQUARES?! NO!!!" I think you get
the picture.
Then it hit me how "American" I was acting. Allow me to explain that
last sentence. Yes, America is a great place. We are a free country.
(At least thats what we are told to believe....but that is for a
different post). But there is an attitude that was coming out in me
that most Americans suffer from. However, in all reality, the shape of
my pizza didn't change its great taste. The square pizza wont give me
cancer. I was then reminded of something Maya Angelou said, "If you
don't like something change it. If you can't change it, change your
attitude. Don't complain."
This post is not just a story of my dinner tonight, it's an apology.
An apology to the poor kid across town who had to suffer through
brussel sprouts tonight. An apology to all children across the globe
with not even a square piece of pizza to fill their empty stomachs. An
apology to all those in the world who are less fortunate. |
